Abstract

The EURECOINT project explores the role of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) in enhancing economic intelligence, competitiveness, and democratic governance, with a specific focus on the Digital Euro project. By combining newly emerging crypto economics tools such as CBDCs and economic intelligence strategic toolkits adapted for competitiveness at the EU level, the project aims to provide a robust framework for leveraging CBDCs to strengthen European economic resilience while safeguarding competition, individual privacy and democratic values. Collaborations with key institutions, such as the Bank for International Settlements, the European Central Bank and Oxford’s Said Business School Future of Fintech Initiative will enable interdisciplinary research that addresses both policy and technological challenges. The project’s methodology includes developing system dynamic models through acquisition of expert knowledge to simulate various CBDC scenarios and their socio-economic impacts. The research will benefit from interdisciplinary training, secondments, and a strong supervisory team, enhancing their career prospects. The project’s scientific contribution lies in advancing understanding of how CBDCs can be integrated into existing economic frameworks, offering insights for policymakers and central banks. It also addresses societal issues by promoting privacy-preserving financial systems and ensuring that the ongoing digitalization of finance aligns with core European principles. The EURECOINT project has significant implications for the financial industry, particularly in Europe, by contributing to the European Commission's vision of making the region a global FinTech hub.
